This letter is aimed at the exponential number of community members (security companies included) owning large SUV’s, big 4x4’s, bakkies and motorbike riders who think they own Kleinmond and its streets. If you have never been involved in a car accident - this is what a little car looks like after a Ford 4x4 with a bull bar (see photo), driven by a young female adult; smashed into it at a speed, far exceeding that of the 60km/h zone, (near the entrance to Kleinmond, close to the lagoon); whilst the driver of the small car was stationary and waiting for the vehicle in front of him to turn right. Due to the impact both of the car seats from the Toyota Tazz were ripped out from their brackets. The neck and body injuries sustained by the couple - physically, emotionally and financially, will definitely not be a quick fix! In fact, they would have been killed if it was not for the quick reaction of the driver, and the fact that both of them wore their seatbelts. This, happening in the SMALL little town we call Kleinmond. Why is it necessary for the drivers of smaller cars to ride with fear and almost on the pavements or on the left side of the yellow line, whilst the big SUV’s, trucks, bakkies and bike riders think they can drive as fast as they can and without any hesitation, flashing their lights and forcing one to move away to avoid an accident? They do so with no fear of retribution. They have absolutely no respect for any fellow drivers and are determined to break every rule in the book, overtake on solid white lines or double lines - especially if travelling from Kleinmond to Hermanus. And why should they stop at the stop streets in Kleinmond or at the robots (Hawston / Onrus). They treat every stop street as a yield sign! They don’t even hesitate or make an attempt to stop - this IN Kleinmond. On numerous occasions we tried to take down the car registration numbers, but to no avail as they drive too fast! The kilometer sign boards are only there for cosmetic purposes. Maybe our Traffic Department should take cognisance of all of the above. There have been so many fatal accidents the past few months on the R43, Clarence Drive and surrounding Roads. I noticed at a road block by the Traffic Department on Saturday at Vermont / Onrus that only small cars were asked to stop to check our drivers licences whilst none of the big SUV’s were asked to stop. We, in our smaller cars have become easy targets for the traffic officers and because we drive within the speed limit. Concerned Driver
