In 2015 a small group of enthusiasts realised a dream: the formation of two new all-breed dog clubs headquartered in the beautiful Cape Whale Coast/Overberg region of the Western Cape: the Whale Coast Kennel Club and the Overberg Kennel Club. They submitted their applications for affiliation to KUSA. October 2016 to October 2017 proved to be a very busy, productive year with both clubs successfully hosting two open shows and the mandatory qualifying show, which paved the way for the hosting of our first championship shows in March 2018, held in Hermanus.
Jetty served as Chairman of the Whale Coast Kennel Club since its inauguration and has been responsible of organising all the club’s events from the very start. She has also served as the Secretary of Overberg Kennel Club since 2022, when the two sister clubs joined forces again, and is now responsible for organising all the shows for both clubs, together with members of the committee. Cheryl Gleeson-Baird, another Pringle Bay resident, is the Chairman of the Overberg Kennel Club and the Secretary of Whale Coast Kennel Club. Madelein Smit, who lives in Hermanus, is the Treasurer of both clubs.

The local dogs collected handfulls of laurels at both shows.
Jetty’s miniature Dachshund, Indigo (14 months) won Best of Breed and Best Junior in Breed in the Whale Coast show. Indigo was also awarded Best Junior in Breed, Reserve Best of Breed and Third Best Junior in the Hound Group in the Overberg show.
Finnley (4 years) won Best SA Bred in Breed and Reserve Best SA Bred in the Hound Group at both shows.
Ebony (3 years old and mother of Indigo) won Best of Breed in the Overberg show.
Madelein Smit’s miniature Dachshund, Flash, was Reserve Best of Breed and Best Puppy in Breed at both shows as well as Third Best Puppy in the Hound Group at the Overberg show.
Arina Fyfer’s Beagle Tatiana won Best of Breed, Best Veteran in Breed and Reserve Best Veteran in the Hound Group at both shows.
Cheryl Gleeson-Baird’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Daisy, won the Best SA Bred in Breed and Best SA Bred in Group at the Whale Coast show and at the Overberg show she won the same awards but was also appointed Reserve Best SA Bred in the Show.
Aro won the Best Junior in Breed and Reserve Best Junior in the Terrier Group.
The seven categories are: gundogs, herding, hounds, terriers, toy, utility, and working dogs.
