Hermanus Harbour set to welcome cruise liner again

On Saturday, 30 March 2024, Hermanus Harbour will greet the Silver Cloud and her 254 passengers.

This small cruise ship, operated by SilverSea, was the fleet’s first ship to take service in 1994. Since her maiden cruise there has been extensive upgrades, including the reconfiguration of an observation lounge.

The ship primarily sails on expedition cruises which include the polar regions. The Silver Cloud stands out as one of the highest crew to guest ratio cruise liners with 20 inflatable boats (zodiacs) and 10 kayaks on board.

Between 26 March and 15 April 2024, the Silver Cloud will call on Hermanus and seven other South African ports. After stopping in Cape Town, the ship will arrive in Hermanus and anchor offshore to bring passengers to Hermanus Harbour with the onboard zodiacs. Anchoring is weather dependant.

Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, stated that Silver Cloud’s arrival has been much anticipated with months of planning.

“The economic spin-off for the local economy is good news and this arrival will provide the experience to benefit future visits. There have already been enquiries from other cruise liners about visiting the Overstrand with its quality and variety of tourism products that international travellers favour. Our natural beauty is renowned, and the cruise liner visitors are eager for new experiences.”

She said a number of itineraries have been designed for the passengers who will be onshore from about 8:00 till 17:00 on the day. “Exploration is not limited to Hermanus only and includes attractions in neighbouring villages. Going forward these options will be extended to ensure experiences comprise the whole of the Overstrand.”

“We need to make the most of this new opportunity afforded by cruise liner visits to create more jobs and support business growth,” Mayor Rabie added. Press release by Overstrand Municipality
