Residents in the Overstrand who require financial assistance for basic services are encouraged to apply for an Indigent grant. While these grants must be renewed annually, new applications can be submitted at any time. Please note that each recipient’s renewal date varies based on their initial application date.
To ensure beneficiaries of the subsidy or grant stay informed, the Overstrand Municipality sends an SMS notification three months before the expiry date to remind recipients to renew their applications, followed by another reminder one month before the expiry date. Therefore, it is crucial that residents keep their contact details up-to-date, current and active.
Since the start of the Indigent project, the finance department has expanded its availability to include longer weekday hours and some Saturdays at community halls in various towns to assist with applications.
Due to the high volume of applications, it is unfortunately not possible to process applications within 10 working days at this stage. Additionally, the municipality follows a thorough verification process before approving or declining applications.
Rest assured that your account will be deferred while your application is under review or being processed. This means that any delay in processing your indigent application will not affect your electricity purchases.
Mayco Member of Finance, Councillor Stephen Williams encourages needy households to follow up regularly: “We assure you that we are working diligently to process all applications as quickly as possible”.
