PRESS RELEASE – The swift action taken by the Overstrand Municipality’s Task Team and the Marine and Coastal Unit during an integrated operation late last night, led to the arrest of four men for allegedly harvesting 202 live West Coast Rock Lobsters in the restricted zone of the Kleinmond Marine Protected Area without a permit.
The officers also confiscated their boat.
Catching undersized lobster outside of season affects their life cycle as the crayfish is still in a growing stage and had not yet reached the maturity stage. This has a negative impact on reproduction, as in future there will not be enough lobsters to mate and ensure the population is sustained through the reproduction process.
