OM PRESS RELEASE– Overstrand residents often question why some streetlights are left on during the day.
While we should all make an effort to conserve electricity, there are valid reasons for keeping certain lights on.
One such reason is to deter theft and vandalism of streetlights. Overstrand Municipality invests thousands of rands annually to repair and replace crucial electrical infrastructure due to these issues. Keeping streetlights on has been an effective deterrent, as thieves are less likely to risk their lives by tampering with live wires.
Additionally, streetlights can be switched on manually for maintenance purposes. They can also be switched on to protect the cables from damage when contractors are working near the cables.
Other factors include control mechanisms that may malfunction, causing the lights to stay on. We appreciate the public’s help in reporting any faulty streetlights.
