KLEINMOND – Adrian and Magdalene Thomas took over the previous Meating Restaurant at the prime corner of Harbour Road in September this year.
“I had the Curry Shop next door when the previous owners of Meating asked me if we would be interested to buy the business,” says Magdalene. “…and then I thought I had enough of travelling all over the world for my job as chef. I wanted to shrink my horisons to Kleinmond and kind of retire here…” smiles Adrian.
Adrian has just arrived back in Kleinmond, where the couple has been living for the past eight years. He grew up in Simon’s Town, joined the navy and worked as chef on ships. Later he worked at the Heerengracht Hotel, became head chef for the Southern Sun-group and later worked for SA Airways. He has been working abroad for 20 years – including Africa, the Middle East and even Russia.
Magdalene grew up in Atlantis and studied Design. She always had an interest in Cape Malay food, that is why she started the Curry Shop. “I renamed this new business to Tides Beach Bar and Restaurant to boost the superb view on the ocean and started trading on 26 September with a limited menu. Now that Adrian is here, we can go full out,” she says.
Their menu boasts scrumptious lamb, steak, chicken and rib dishes. They have an interesting variety of seafood and in season they will also serve crayfish. They serve breakfast, light meals and then the full monty for dinner.
