PRESS RELEASE – With the December summer holiday fast approaching, we’re expecting a flurry of visitors to the Overstrand for the annual holiday season. As more people come to enjoy what the area has to offer, food and drink consumption will naturally increase. In light of this, the Overstrand Municipality asks everyone to be mindful of their environmental footprint.
Simple acts of consideration towards waste removal teams can make a big difference. Please ensure that your dogs are kept under control to avoid any risk of bites to refuse collectors during waste pick-up.
For safety reasons, always wrap broken glass in newspaper before placing it in bags or wheelie bins to prevent injury to workers. Whenever possible, please recycle or dispose of such items at public drop-off points or transfer stations.
Recycling doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s important to know what should and shouldn’t go into your recycling bags.
The golden rule for using your clear plastic recycling bag is to ensure that all items are clean and dry. Common recyclables such as glass, plastic water bottles, milk cartons, newspapers, cereal boxes, and cardboard boxes are all accepted. However, containers must be thoroughly cleaned and dried before being placed in the bag.
Black bags are for ‘wet’ waste, such as food scraps and items that cannot be recycled.
Please do not place bags or wheelie bins out the night before waste collection. All refuse must be put out by 07:00 on collection day. In areas affected by baboons, refuse bags may not be left on the pavement, and wheelie bins must be secured to prevent access.
Clear recycling bags are collected on the same day as black bags by municipal refuse trucks. They are transported to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Schulphoek rd in Hermanus where the recyclables are offloaded, sorted, and baled.
For every clear recycling bag placed out, a new one will be provided when the full bag is collected.
