OM PRESS RELEASE – Sinking a borehole, well point, or using alternative water sources, is an effective way for property owners to conserve valuable potable water and to reduce their monthly water bills.
While the use of groundwater is encouraged, residents should also be mindful that excessive extraction can lead to a drop in groundwater levels, which may affect other users, decrease river and stream flows, and cause environmental damage. Overuse can also pose a risk to the municipal water supply system.
Property owners are therefore requested to contact the Municipality’s Civil Engineering Services Department to complete the necessary registration form for their boreholes or well points, in accordance with Section 51 of the Overstrand Water Supply and Sanitation By-law:
- Hermanus to Fisherhaven/Benguela Cove: Anne-Marie Jesson, ajesson@overstrand.gov.za
- Kleinmond/Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay/Rooi-Els: Theresa Arendse, tarendse@overstrand.gov.za
- Gansbaai/Stanford/Pearly Beach/Baardskeerdersbos/Buffeljagsbaai: Tanya Smit, tsmit@overstrand.gov.za
The borehole and wellpoint registration form can also be downloaded from the municipal website, www.overstrand.gov.za > application forms.
Please note that boreholes and well points must comply with the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998). Section 51(10) of the Municipality’s Water By-law requires that water used for human consumption meet the SANS 0241 drinking water quality standards.
Water from a borehole or well point may not be connected to any installation that is also linked to the municipal water supply.
