Eyballing a shark
It’s time to tango…
Kleinmond will this weekend receive its first two Argentinian exchange students as part of the Kleinmond/Sarmiento Cultural Exchange Programme. Caro Nunez (18) and Ana Luz Blackie (16) are from the Patagonian community of Sarmiento and are both descendants of the group of Afrikaners and other South Africans that settled there after the South African War that ended in 1902. In the accompanying photo the two students and members of Sarmiento’s South African Association meet with Sarmiento’s mayor, Sebastian a. Balochi, earlier this week.
We have planned a whole range of fun activities for their month long visit which includes horse riding on the beach, shark cage diving, rowing, hiking, visits to wine farms and surrounding towns such as Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Greyton and of course Cape Town where they will be spending four days with hosts, the Dickason family ( themselves descendants of the settlers in Argentina). They will also take part in a whole range of cultural activities which includes learning Afrikaans (they are proficient in English), learning to prepare local dishes and learning more about our local communities. They will also do volunteer work at local schools and work with the elderly. Later this year we will call for applications for two young persons from Hangklip/Kleinmond to visit Sarmiento to experience their culture and country.
To follow the exploits of the two young Argentinians join the Kleinmond/Sarmiento facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/648062695675766/ . It will also give you an insight into life in this interesting community.
We kick off the programme on Sunday at around 16:00 with a meet and greet in the parking area at Kleinmond’s main beach. You are more than welcome to join us and say hello to our visitors. On Monday evening at 19:00 we are planning at sunset picnic on the Palmiet beach. Bring a blanket and something to eat and drink and join us. Hasta luego!!
Overberg Kennel club is hosting a KUSA Champion Dog Show Saturday 11 January 2020 at the sport fields of Kleinmond Laerskool. Some 230 odd dogs will be competing on the day. Its not often you get to see so many different pure bred dogs together in Kleinmond. Public is welcome to visit and also support the Kleinmond Laerskool for their fundraising on the day. We wish to also encourage young people and children to get involved in the sport and there is a child and Junior handling challenge at the show where children can see how to handle and exhibit dogs and learn more on the breed.
