Residents threathening to evict foreign nationals from Kleinmond were told at a meeting this afternoon that there is a proposal on the table that local businesses be given a quota when it comes to employees. This new quota system would entail that businesses employ 70% South Africans and 30% foreign nationals. In the meantime Home Affairs and the Department of Labour will be asked to visit local businesses and check the papers of employees to see whether employees are legally in the country. Businesses who employ so called illegal immigrants can be given a hefty fine.
While leaders from the community, the DA, ANC and other groups appealed to the community not to resort to violence, members of the community given an opportunity to speak said they wanted the foreigners to go. "They must give us some free air. They must go while you rectify the situation," one told the gathering.
Earlier in the week foreign nationals in Kleinmond were apparently told that they had until tomorrow ( Sunday 3 Feb 2019) to leave town.
