Leopard sightings in the Cape mountains are few and far between, and photos of such sightings are scarcer than hen’s teeth. More often than not a sighting consists of a mere fleeting glimpse as the cat darts across the road or hiking trail, and disappears into the vegetation once more. But every once in a while, someone is in just the right place at just the right time, and they manage to snap a picture of the encounter for others to enjoy (and make us very jealous!).
A prime example is the wonderful photo below, courtesy of Houtema River Cabins in the heart of the Kogelberg. The alarm calls of a small group of klipspringer had alerted the owners to the leopard’s presence and they manage to spot it from a distance and get some amazing photos with a long lens. This individual is known to us from camera trap photos, and although we have not been able to confirm the sex with 100% certainty, we suspect that it is a female.
Many thanks to Houtema River Cabins for sharing this amazing experience! Keep an eye on their FB page, the full story of the encounter and more photos to follow soon!
